Gabriela Hess

We communicate through images and shapes, yet words remain the ultimate destination of every message that seeks to fulfil its purpose.

It is within this universe of words that Gabriela Hess works, building on her training in fine art and graphic design in Lugano (CH), which she has since expanded into the study of classical, modern and experimental calligraphy. She has honed her technique by attending workshops all over the world, travelling between Switzerland, Italy, England and the United States.

A twenty-year journey that has developed into a style uniquely her own.

Her work is aimed at clients who wish to stand out through communication that is not only elegant, but entirely exclusive.
 Her work has been featured in books and magazines on graphic design, calligraphy and typography. Gabriela is an active member of the Swiss Calligraphy Association, the Italian Calligraphy Association and the Ticino Calligraphy Group.

In 2003, she opened her calligraphy atelier, a place where one can immerse oneself in antique papers, nibs and inks, whilst also using modern writing tools.
It is here that the hand-crafted logos and advertising slogans are created for Lindt’s Passion Chocolat products, as well as the lettering designed for events organised by Bally, Montblanc, Louis Vuitton, Bulgari and other international luxury brands.

Gabriela has always pursued continuous research into styles and materials, paying particular attention to the ethical aspects of production.

Over the years, she has collaborated with other calligraphers trained by her, such as Benedetta Galante Gnecchi. Together, they work with companies and boutiques on calligraphic projects and live calligraphy events.

Gabriela’s experimentation and studies have led her to develop her own style: Soleil Calligraphy, characterised by highly gestural letters – almost like artistic forms – yet highly legible.

“My art is not merely about interpreting or capturing the meaning of things; rather, it is about allowing oneself to be swept along by the flow of perceptions, perhaps searching for the face of a forgotten sound or one hidden within a form. When I write to the rhythm of silence, it is as though I feel the need to evolve, to come to understand the nuances of every gesture, surrendering myself completely to the movements that bring sensations to life.”.
